Shallow vs. Deep Pools

H2O Academy is an award-winning swim school for students’ ages 4 months to adults. We embarked on the journey of building our own facility in 2020 and had our grand opening in Spring of 2021. While researching best pool depth options, we learned most people in the world, especially in the USA and Australia learn to swim in shallow swim pools like ours (fun fact – these 2 countries also have the most swimming Olympic medals!).

So why is our pool 3.6 ft throughout? The answer is simple! Our pool was built solely for the purpose of teaching people to swim. It’s a shallow, warm pool kept at the tropical temperature of 88-90’ Fahrenheit, so students won’t feel cold, increasing their engagement and enjoyment during swimming lessons.

How does our shallow pool help students learn to swim? Our pool’s 3.6 ft depth is ideal to aid in teaching students’ proper technique right from the start. For our parented baby and toddler classes, having a shallow pool allows the adults in the class to comfortably participate and properly assist their babies or toddlers through the lesson progressions. This is especially accommodating for adults holding their young children who may not feel entirely comfortable in a water environment or who haven’t yet learned to swim themselves. A warm, shallow pool environment helps put both parents and children at ease and increases their enjoyment during swimming lessons! During unparented classes, our shallow pool allows H2O’s knowledgeable instructors to easily and safely guide their students through our curriculum’s skill progressions. This ensures proper technique is developed right from the start and avoids bad habits forming. Our teachers can easily walk alongside students in the water to help improve and adjust their body position, kicking and stroke technique, proper floating position and much more! Our teachers have the mobility and ease to walk to swim alongside their students throughout the entire lesson. For our Mini and Kid students, there is a submerged platform on one end of the pool creating an extra shallow corner, allowing younger students to sit and stand easily during their lessons. This is a great place for students to practice their bubbles, cheek dips, wait for their turn to practice floats and to gather their equipment for the next skill. But what about older and taller students? Teen and adult students are easily able to stand in the pool to receive instructions or watch instructors demonstrate proper technique. Many adults have put off learning to swim because larger, deep pools can be intimidating and even cause panic and fear which can deter adults from learning to swim all together. Learning to swim in a shallow pool puts these fears at ease and allows for a comfortable, inviting, and safe introduction into a water environment. For our taller teen and adult students, don’t worry, proper swimming technique is a horizontal body position. You’ll be able to develop and progress your technique in our shallow, warm pool without difficulty!
